Oddly, it was an all food, no film, Memorial Weekend. Must do a triple feature screening day of MIB3, Dark Shadows and Snow White and the Huntsman very soon!

However, last Thursday I did see Chernobyl Diaries, courtesy of Philadelphia Film Society member preview screenings.

Did you know this movie is written by the same writer/director of the Paranormal Activity series?

When Oren Peli directed the breakout horror hit Paranormal Activity in 2007, he had virtually no filmmaking experience, having come from a software programming background. Since then, however, the Israeli-born Peli has quickly become a horror-movie machine, producing (and occasionally writing) the Paranormal Activity sequels, the James Wan chiller Insidious, and now, Chernobyl Diaries - Vulture.com (Chernobyl Diaries is directed by Bradley Parker (Let Me In)

The setting of this latest fear flick is already a horror story of historic proportions, taking place in the abandoned town of Prypiat where the 1986 Ukrainian Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster happened.

As of 2008 The Chernobyl Forum estimates that the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas); this figure includes some 50 emergency workers who died of acute radiation syndrome, nine children who died of thyroid cancer and an estimated total of 3940 deaths from radiation-induced cancer and leukemia. - Wikipedia

That in and of itself is the epitome of horror, without adding any supernatural elements or radioactive mutants.

Although I also agree with this blogger:

Is it a found footage type film like Paranormal Activity? No. Here's why -

We actually did think of making it a found-footage film, but the more we worked on the story, it just felt like it wouldn’t make sense, that it would feel forced and inorganic. But we decided that, even though it isn’t going to be found footage, we wanted it to feel authentic. So we decided we were going to shoot it not like a horror movie, but a documentary where horrific things happen to people. We made sure our actors were very natural, that a lot of the dialogue was improvised, that the camerawork was done in a very natural way, so we don’t have shots that feel like they’re from a crane or anything like that. - Vulture.com interview with Oren Peli

Do I recommend Chernobyl Diaries? I'm not a good judge of horror movies; I scare too easily. But I do agree with this blogger:

There is a palpable sense of loss and isolation hanging over the proceedings... I was leaning forward in my seat, fully invested for its brief duration...A standard horror film it may be, but it plows ahead with grim determination and should be applauded for playing it straight with such a potent premise... - Shloggs Horror Blog

Trader Joe's Balela

Okay, I'm seriously trying to shed a few lbs now. I've got upcoming events and really need to look svelte in my spring/summer frocks and evening finery.

Therefore, today's vegetarian picnic was from HipCityVeg (127 S. 18th Street Phila, PA). Blogger, PhillyPhoodie wasn't too keen on his experience, but I was surprisingly satisfied with the Philly Steak grilled onions and mushrooms (all plant based, no meat no cheese). And truthfully, I've always preferred sweet potato fries to regular; although, not sure they even count as diet food, just vegetarian.

For dinner - here's my latest Trader Joe's quick meal. Look in the refrigerated aisle for Balela - Middle Eastern Salad of chickpeas, tomatoes, black beans, parsley, onion, soybean/olive oil blend, distilled vinegar, hot pepper, garlic, sea salt, pepper and mint.

I have a thing for hot tuna fish, and I have fresh green beans, so I diced the green beans and sauteed them in olive oil, just a few minutes, not cooked, but more than blanched. Then added in the white tuna chunks and sauteed both for a few more minutes.

Poured the beans and tuna in a bowl and then added the Balela - cold. Mixing everything together. I'm sure most people will either want all the ingredients hot or cold, but I tend to like to mix hot and cold ingredients; not sure why this pleases my taste buds.

At any rate, this is a very light, but delicious combo, perfectly seasoned with enough textures to give your brain that pleasure hit!

City Tavern Epicurean Extravaganza

Tinsel & Tine was invited to a City Tavern (click link for T & T City Tavern Restaurant post) catered fundraiser to benefit the historic home Harriton House (500 Harriton Rd Bryn Mawr, PA).

This was the 3rd Annual Epicurean Extravaganza held at City Tavern Restaurant to benefit this agriculture and education center. I asked Chef Walter Staib how the event came about, was it just the symbiosis of two Philadelphia Historic establishments?

He answered, Yes, but also, he lives across the street from Harriton and has filmed many of his TV show episodes A Taste of History in their historic kitchens.

Harriton House and it's gardens are open to the public with many programs and events taking place throughout the year.

Harriton House was built in 1704 by Rowland Ellis, however it's longest, and best known owner was Charles Thomson, Secretary to the Continental Congresses and designer of the Great Seal of the United States.

In addition, Thomson was an ardent abolitionist who managed his farm with paid labor and by letting his land on shares with his workers. He had a continuing correspondence with his old friend Thomas Jefferson, and in a letter to Jefferson, Thomson argued that slavery was like a cancer on this great new country which would come to bloodshed if it could not be resolved by religion, philosophy, or reason.

Now on to the grandness of the evening - the FOOD! Featuring sumptuous tables laden with 18th Century fare. See below photo slide show:

For history buffs, here's a couple of City Tavern fun food facts:

The early colonist often dined on courses consisting of up to twenty-four dishes laid out around a centerpiece. Items were arranged symmetrically and according to height & importance. Roasts lay on large platters and full soup tureens stood at the ready.

Oysters were so plentiful in the 18th Century that 2nd street was paved with the shells.

In colonial times, virtually everyone had recipes for ale, which was relatively easy to make because it didn’t require cold fermentation, like its cousin lager. One of the most unique recipes comes from Benjamin Franklin, who brewed his ale with the essence of spruce.

There is no doubt that 18th Century Americans’ admiration for Europe waxed and waned. But they always enthusiastically welcomed French ice cream and pastry, German breads and cookies, and the English puddings and jellies.

Take Out - Rampart

Woody Harrelson's Rampart comes out on DVD this week.

I don't make a habit of writing posts about movies already on DVD. That's something I post to Tinsel & Tine's facebook page; The exception this time is because I already wrote this a few months back for The Philadelphia Film Society's site, after their preview screening of Rampart; but it got pushed to the back burner as I was working on some other posts, so now's a good time to dust it off:

The Rampart Division of the Los Angeles Police Department serves communities to the west and northwest of Downtown Los Angeles including Echo Park, Pico-Union and Westlake. Its name is derived from Rampart Boulevard.

During the late 90's allegations of extreme police misconduct and dirty cop scandals plagued the department. The television show "The Shield" was originally called "Rampart," and the LAPD asked them to change the name. The movie "Training Day" was also originally called "Rampart", again the LAPD asked them to change the name.

This Rampart, featuring Woody Harrelson, directed by Oren Moverman and originally scripted by one of L.A.'s most respected crime-writers, James Ellroy, received no complaints from the LAPD. In fact, Bernard Parks, the Chief of Police during that time, asked to meet with Moverman to offer his first hand knowledge of the events. Information that could become useful for perhaps yet another movie with the title of Rampart; but Moverman's film really only uses the Rampart scandals as a backdrop.

Harrelson's character, Dave Brown, is just a sketch or composite of the kind of egotism and corruption that can be found here and there among those who wear the badge. Brown is a Vietnam Vet, on the force 24 years. In the opening scene he intimidates a female rookie cop by forcing her to eat a side of fries she wants to discard. He puts a perp's head through an interrogation room window and basically drives around LA like he owns the place, surveying everything from behind his cop shades.

Then we see Dave Brown at home, or should I say at home(s), as it's actually two neighboring houses; in each one lives an ex-wife (Cynthia Nixon & Anne Heche) with each ex he's had a daughter (Sammy Boyarsky & Brie Larson). The daughters are both half siblings and first cousins (Nixon/Heche characters are sisters). Everyone seems comfortable with the communal living situation, although it's obvious Dave doesn't rule the roost in either household.

His eldest daughter greets him by his department nickname “Date Rape”, a name he got for killing an alleged serial date rapist. And he simply says “Don't call me that” without any real menace.

Brown embroils himself in two back to back offenses that lands him under investigation with the department. One case involving police brutality caught on tape and the other involving a card game robbery and shooting. But even before these infractions, hand held camera shots give the impression that Brown is being watched or tailed. This effect intensifies as Brown starts to feel more and more persecuted, with camera angles shot through openings and from a distance. But is it only in his mind?

In truth the film isn't a crime drama or police exposé, it's a character study of a man who is both extremely articulate and seductive and at the same time, ridiculous and immoral. In many ways we learn most about this character which Harrelson brings expertly to life, through his relationships with his family of women, and a recent sexual affair with a lady lawyer (Robin Wright) than we do from his identity as a cop.

In an interview Moverman said he had to take Ellroy's original script and make it manageable. I have a feeling that script was more your traditional crime drama, dirty cop shakedown scenario, something I've seen enough of to last me a lifetime; but I feel others may be looking for that and be disappointed by Rampart's more indy edge.

Dishing Up: A Little Bit of Heaven

I saw the PFS preview screening of A Little Bit of Heaven weeks ago and was waiting to post my thoughts, once there was a bit of talk or buzz about the movie, but I don't think that's going to happen.

True, the movie is a candidate for straight to video; but on that level it has merit. Much less frothy than some of Kate Hudson's other fare such as: Bride Wars, My Best Friend's Girl or You, Me and Dupree, A Little Bit of Heaven is basically the female equivalent of Joseph Gordon Levitt's 50/50.

Marley Corbett, while under anesthesia for a colonoscopy, is told by God (Whoopi Goldberg) that she's dying and has 3 wishes. Okay, that part's a bit hokey, but Hudson dealing with work, family, friends and finally falling in love, all while delivering her swan song, is, for the most part, touching and funny.

The movie is set in New Orleans, which was the location for Hudson's little known film The Skeleton Key, which I rather liked. Director Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman) makes good use of the locale for this film without making mention of the city.

Anyone with the misfortune of going through colon cancer will probably find all manner of inconsistencies in this movie. Anyone looking for a profound, tight script with good pacing, won't find it here; but at the same time, I dare you to leave the theater (or end your streaming) without being moved to tears.

On a side note: Why has The Almighty been portrayed by Morgan Freeman and Whoopi Goldberg; when it's men that look like Michael Douglas and Donald Sutherland who rule the world? Interesting...

On a side, side note: Marley Corbett has never been in love until she falls for her doctor (Gael García Bernal), not to jinx myself, but I can picture this being my fate too - finally find someone, right before checking out.

Just a Taste: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Aging – without proper retirement funds, without a spouse, needing a hip replacement, feeling too old to be desirable, put out to pasture, needing closure with a person you fell in love with over 40 years ago. These are all rather depressing subjects; yet, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is anything but depressing. It's lively, humorous and quick-witted.

Although you'd expect nothing less from such a stellar cast of veterans: Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup. Each plays a character who has reached an advanced stage in their life where they are in need of a change of address or a need to start a new chapter in their lives. Separately they each find an ad for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and the Beautiful - located in crowded, colorful, bustling, India.

Directed by John Madden, who last year had Helen Mirren in hand to hand combat against Nazi war criminals in The Debt, obviously is interested in telling stories about life still being interesting passed what most of us consider our prime. As the film aptly says - Everything will be okay in the end; and if it's not okay, then it's not the end.

Philly Restaurant - White Dog Cafe (XPN Music Film Fest)

I was pretty good both calorie and pocketbook wise, and brought snacks to eat during most of last weekend's XPN/PFS Music Film Festival, but I did dine out twice - Saturday night with a friend at The White Dog Cafe.

This used to be my very favorite restaurant, I still love the vibe, but now I've had a few mediocre meals there in the last few months.

Did you know The White Dog was name after 19th century, scholar, teacher, spiritualist Madame Helena P. Blavatsky?

In the 90's I attended several classes and meetings at the Theosophical Society, the philosophical religion H.P. Blavatsky founded. I even bought all the volumes of her book, The Secret Doctrine. It's all very dense, sci-fi, esoteric, metaphysical and existential, which is cool! But most of it went over my head.

At any rate, Madame Blavatsky lived where the White Dog Cafe resides, 3420 Sansom Street Philadelphia, PA 19104. At one point in her life she suffered a badly infected leg. When doctors told her she would have to lose the limb, she would have none of it and cured the infection herself by keeping a white dog next to her leg while she slept.

Philly Restaurant - Tria (XPN Music Film Fest)

My other dining experience during the music film festival was Sunday afternoon at Tria (3131 Walnut Street). My sister had given me a gift certificate for Christmas and this was the perfect time to make use of it.

This spot used to be called Biba, same owner, Jon Myerow who has Tria cafes in Rittenhouse Square and Washington Square West. But this location was going to focus on wines, so it was given a different moniker. However, now it appears to just be a 3rd Tria.

Tria does a great thing called Sunday School, where they choose a selection of beers, wines and cheese, give a detailed description and price the items very low so you can sample several things, although I just had one Sly Fox beer.

I started with: Warm Tuscan White Bean Spread with Paprika Toast $4½ - 3 Tines And Rosemary and Fennel Marinated Olives $4 - 3 Tines

And then I had one of those moments when you just really savor what you're eating. I really can't even describe why, but this was hands down the BEST PANINI I've ever eaten: Smoked Chicken Panino with Caciocavallo, Piquillo Peppers and Balsamic Onion $9½ - 4 Tines

Interview: Tom Brandt Film Buff and Foodie (Part II of II)

I hope you had an opportunity to read Part I of Tinsel & Tine's interview with movie theater turned restaurant owner Tom Brandt. If not, here's the link: Brandt Part I.

The focus of the first post was on Tom's career and family history owning movie theaters and his love of film and the cinema. Part II focuses on Brandt's passion for his newest venture, Oaxaca Kitchen (New Haven, CT), the restaurant he co-owns with chef Prasad Chirnomula.

T & T: What makes Oaxaca Kitchen unique besides Chef Prasad?

TB: We are not the normal Tex Mex style of cuisine found in this part of the country. Our cuisine is all about the traditional home style Mexican Cuisine. Like our Beef Barbacoa, served in parchment paper, so tender the meat just falls apart. And our Fire Grilled Duck with Pistachio Mole, the Ceviche Veracruz topped with tomato lime sorbet and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Mole Rojo which is a chocolate chili red mole with fire grilled chicken.

We also feature a selection of designer Tacos filled with choices such as: Baha Red Snapper, Pork Belly and Duck Confit. And we create our own hot sauces in the kitchen ranging from not so hot to “Ouch”. The deserts are also spectacular featuring the Ultra Moist Tres Leches and The Pepita scented Caramel custard.

T & T: I'm salivating! I'd have to order all three tacos. Were you wild about Mexican Cuisine before Oaxaca Kitchen?

TB: I really got into the Mexican cuisine when I lived in Santa Fe, NM but had not had the opportunity to really experience the traditional style of Oacxaca cuisine until I met Chef Prasad. I immediately fell in love with it and all its complexities.

To this day, I always have a supply of green Hatch chilis in my fridge ready to be served with just about everything. Yes, I am addicted to the heat.

Brandt's friend and partner, Prasad is an award winning chef with recognition from the James Beard Foundation. The New York Times recently rated Prasad's Indian Restaurants, Thali India "Best Indian restaurant in the New York area". Brandt is also now a part of the Thali chain and together they have opened a second Oacxaca Kitchen.

T &T: So even though Prasad is the Executive Chef, you also like to cook, right?

TB: I love to cook and take cooking classes. My wife Sue and I just participated in a class in Santa Fe, NM focusing on Local New Mexican food.

Tom's wife Sue is a ceramic artist and photography teacher at the Wilton, Connecticut high school. I envy them their companionship and the fun they have traveling, mountain biking, camping, skiing, wine tasting, attending music festivals, etc... Brandt says together they share a love for great art and food!

T &T: You seem to be hands on at Oaxaca, what do you like about the restaurant industry?

TB: It’s all about the interaction between the waitstaff, kitchen and customers; and the madness that ensues each day as the place gets humming with people and the Mexican music builds in the background while the aromas of freshly roasted spices fill the air. It’s quite a rush to see all these pieces come together with the ultimate goal being the great reviews of our satisfied customers.

T &T: The name Oaxaca (which I looked up on Wikipedia, is a town or district in Mexico) is very hard to pronounce - did you worry this could be a detraction for the success of the place?

TB: Not for a minute. It’s a great conversation topic. Only 1 in 50 pronounce it right the first time. It sounds like Wa-Ha-Ca.

T &T: You told me you see the similarities between the theater and restaurant business; that mainly at the core they are both about entertaining the public outside of their home. But what hadn't you thought about before embarking on restaurant ownership?

TB: The hours. It is the most time consuming endeavor that I have ever experienced, but also the most rewarding!

T &T: Would you consider investing in another restaurant? And if so, what type of cuisine or theme? Or would it depend on meeting another amazing chef?

TB: For the time being, I am focused on the existing chain of 4 Thali Indian restaurants and 2 Oaxaca Kitchen Mexican restaurants. I would definitely consider investing in another restaurant in the future. We are currently looking into NYC for our next signature location. As far as working with another chef, -- probably not. I am lucky to be able to work with someone who is a great friend first and a business partner second. I am not sure that I would want to press my luck.

Tom's favorite dish at Oaxaca is the Mole Rojo (previously mentioned). And at Thali, he can't get enough of the Konkan Crab appetizer, which is lump crab meat mixed with coconut milk, ginger, garlic, mustard seeds and Serrano Chilis.

One of the Thali restaurant is located on Yale University's campus and the students really go for the Dean's Dosa, a 5 foot long ultra thin crispy crepe filled with curried potatoes. "When it is served, it resembles a piece of folk art.", says Brandt.

There are some people in this world who are just too talented and accomplished and Tom seems to be one of them. (said jokingly). When I asked him about his libation preference, I found out he helped to create the specialty cocktails for the restaurant. On top of which, he and Sue have an extensive wine cellar, mostly collecting bottles from boutique vineyards in CA.

TB: My absolute favorite is the Oaxaca Margarita aka the “OMG” which is made with fresh squeezed lime juice, El Jimador Anejo Tequilla, Tuaca, Agave Syrup and a splash of OJ. Rocks and salt. "Bring it on!"

Thank you Tom so much for visiting with me and my readers. It truly meant a lot that you reached out to say my food and film / food in film concept struck a chord with you; give me your assessment of the symbiosis of film and food?

TB: I love your concept and what you are all about. You have single-handedly combined all my interests into one blog. It inspired me to reach out to you in hopes of further developing the possibilities of throwing food and film events that not only involve recreating the food from the movie, but also to include the actors, writers and critics into the mix as well.

TB cont: There are many movies with memorable food scenes. It would be a fantasy for many people to experience the re-creation of those meals by professional chefs in addition to screening the movie in advance of the meal. You inspired me to work on this kind of event. I am considering starting with the food from the movie “Like Water for Chocolat” and continuing from there.

Needless to say, this concept is a fantasy for me! I love the idea of lending my passion, energy and blog in some capacity to help create these food and film events.

So stay tuned readers, this could be Tinsel & Tine's big break!

XPN / PFS Music Film Festival Round Up

On Thursday April 26 The Inaugural XPN Music Film Festival, produced by The Philadelphia Film Society got underway at the Annenberg Center in University City, Philadelphia.

For anyone unfamiliar with XPN:

The opening night film was a concert tour documentary called Big Easy Express. The film's upbeat opening credits, took on a look and feel reminiscent of classic movie musicals like Hello Dolly or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers; as we follow an exuberant young woman through train car after train car filled with jamming musicians from three groups on tour together: Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show.

It was hard to tell the musicians apart from one band to the other - all grungy, folk, Rockabilly revelers. Well, one stood apart, Alex Ebert, from the Magnetic Zeros. This guy has incredible energy and presence, a sexy Jesus-type in a white farmers night shirt!

HOT CLUB OF PHILADELPHIA

The Opening Night Party was an elegant affair held at the Pennsylvania School of Law (3501 Sansom Street) and was catered by Doc Magrogan's Oyster House, opening in just a few short weeks adjacent to the Law School. Plenty of fresh seafood abound and I truly enjoyed the mini crab cakes. The bar was stocked by sponsors Dock Street Brewery and Barefoot Wines.

Friday night I screened the first half of No Room for Rock Stars also a concert tour doc, featuring the youthful, up and coming performers of The Warped Tour. The tension between the more edgy, alternative artists and the new pop sensation Mike Posner, seemed to be the angle of the piece.

Paul Eagleston, Ryan Avery, Michael Lerman

I then popped downstairs to catch the second half of Hi My Name is Ryan featuring Ryan Avery, a cherub faced lad, resembling a 1950's choirboy; who would ever guess behind his chubby, innocent demeanor lurks a wild, punk rock performance artist, who pushes the boundaries of TMI, decency and absurdity. This off-beat documentary by Paul Eagleston and Stephen Rose is both weird and warm. It's hard not to be taken in by Ryan, who was in attendance for the first screening. Leaving the Annenberg I headed over to World Cafe Live for the Girl Walk // All Day Dance Party. I didn't get the name of the DJ, but he was spinning really good, fun 80's and 90's pop/rock songs. I wanted to stay and dance, but my attire of a heavy sweater and too tight jeans didn't seem conducive, so I shot some pics and left.

The filmmakers were also present at both of my Saturday screenings: Of All The Things about legendary songwriter, Dennis Lambert, who together with his musical partner Brian Potterwrote and produced many, many popular songs of the 70's and early 80's including one of my very favorites - Dennis Edward's "Don't Look Any Further", but also hits like: Four Tops “Ain't No Woman”, The Commodores “Night Shift”, Glen Campbell,“Rhinestone Cowboy” & “Don't Pull Your Love”, Tavares “It Only Takes a Minute” Player “Baby Come Back” and more.

The filmmaker is Lambert's own son Jody who documents his father's concert tour in the Philippines, where his music, particularly a solo album which failed in the US, "Bags and Things", is not just popular in the Philippines, but a fabric of their most treasured pop culture. The film is quite entertaining, mainly due to Lambert himself; he's lovable and dottering, musically gifted and naturally funny. Here's a link to the Of All The Things Q & A.

Patron, Denny Tedesco, Patron

The Wrecking Crew (screening sold out!) is truly an important documentary for music historians.

Director Denny Tedesco is the son of Tommy Tedesco, an amazing guitar player who was part of an era of music making when studio musicians ruled! The best of the best of these musicians were nicknamed "The Wrecking Crew" In the early 1960's to mid 70's just about every pop/rock n' roll artists used these guys [and lone female, Carol Kaye] on their albums to achieve chart topping success.

The documentary features interviews from key members of The Wrecking Crew: Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Carol Kaye, Glen Campbell, Joe Osborn as well as interviews from notables: Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Dick Clark and more. The preservation of these great musician's stories are part of the American Songbook. The Wrecking Crew documentary needs additional funds to purchase the rights to use all the music in the film. Saturday Night TLA (334 South Street) partnered with the Music Film Festival to show a midnight screenings of Rocky Horror Picture Show – added bonus – The Transylvania Nipple Productions! I got some really racy shots from my balcony perch - Rocky Horror Photo Album.

Destin Daniel, Adam Shipiro, Lauren Coleman

Sunday screened the narrative feature, I Am Not A Hipster, a film about an Indy music singer/songwriter, Brook (Dominic Bogart) going thru a mid-twenties life crisis.

The film has a terrifically simple and genuine quality. The storytelling really speaks to the pain of the character without being maudlin, but retains an edge. Also hits just the right note in terms of musical performances and soundtrack. The director, Destin Daniel was in attendance, and although I think he's an emerging filmmaker to take note of; I feel his true talent lies in screenwriting.

Other commitments on Sunday evening prevented me from seeing any other films, including the closing night film, Under African Skies which chronicles Paul Simon's return to South Africa to perform the 25th Anniversary Graceland concert.

Interview: Tom Brandt Film Buff and Foodie (Part I of II)

I have two friends who are extremely supportive of Tinsel & Tine. Like most of my loyal, yet silent audience, these friends are not the type to write comments; instead they talk up my blog to people they meet, which is a far more valuable contribution.

One such mention, attracted a reader who contacted me to say how much he liked my concept of Film and Food, particularly the two art forms in combination - for example, The Babette's Feast post. Upon further conversation, he revealed to me that his career path has taken him from owning movie theaters, to restaurants. Immediately, I asked if I could do an interview, as I was fascinated to meet someone who combined both of my interests in a lucrative manner.

So here is Part I of my two part interview with Thomas Brandt:

Film Buff and Foodie:

After my initial conversation with Tom, I envisioned him owning two, maybe three small, independent art house movie theaters, like Jenkintown Hiway, or Bryn Mawr Film Institute, for those familiar with Philly suburb movie houses. Turns out, Tom Brandt is part of a long tradition of theater franchising.

T & T: Tell me a bit about your movie theater origins?

TB: I was born into the theatre business 48 years ago as my family owned and operated movie theatres for 3 generations, since the 1920’s under the name of Brandt Theatres and Trans-Lux Theatres.

The first theatres were actually newsreel theatres in NYC where you could watch the news standing up in a small auditorium with rear screen projection. The chain grew at times to over 100 screens that were mainly located on the east coast with a concentration in New York City and Connecticut.

TB cont: My family has also been involved with Broadway theatres in Times Square at 42nd street, dating back to the early 1940’s. My grandfather was one of the original founders and board members of the American Theatre Wing which is the organization that is best known for producing the Tony Awards.

T & T: That really is quite a legacy. How did you start in the family business?

TB: I began my career as a theatre usher, box office cashier and concessionaire (I made the best popcorn…hints of a future involved with food) and over time worked in every position possible in the theatre from operations to being involved with the booking of films through the movie studios as well as designing and building modern multiplex theatres.

T & T: Your bio mentions Storyteller Theaters?

TB: Yes. The Trans-Lux movie chain was sold in the mid 1980’s and after changing hands a few times is currently owned by Bowtie cinemas. In the early 1990’s, I helped acquire a small chain of theatres located in the desert southwest. These theatres were eventually renamed Storyteller Theatres and over time expanded into markets in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming. The total screen count was up to 70 when sold to a private equity firm based out of California. I stayed on for the next 4 years and operated as the CEO of the chain.

T & T: So, you've been an investor and CEO in this movie business, but would you consider yourself a film buff?

TB: I have always loved the art form of cinematic presentation. My favorite place to be as a child was watching a double feature with a cartoon before the show at the now demolished Tran-Lux 85th street theatre. That love of film translated into spending quite a bit of time at film festivals such as Telluride and Sundance where there is a majority of independent and foreign film product which is my true passion.

TB cont: The Theatre business has always been a great investment, but is totally subject to the quality of films being put out by Hollywood. There are good years and there are bad years, like any industry. Final answer: Film Buff!

T & T: Favorite film?

TB: Cinema Paradiso and Life is Beautiful

I asked Brandt what his strategy was for growing StoryTeller Theaters in the face of so much competition from bigger chains like Regal and AMC.

TB: While I am no longer involved with Storyteller Theatres, the answer to that question is simple. Find smaller markets with no competition where you are the only game in town. Exclusivity in a particular market is the key to the business. It is difficult to compete against the “Big Guys”, so my philosophy was to focus on smaller markets in vacation towns.

T &T: One of my reasons for starting Tinsel & Tine is because being in a movie theater is a happy place for me; however, movie prices are now daunting. In your opinion,will there ever be a cap or will we one day pay $20 a pop to see a movie?

TB: I think movie theater prices are high, but not in comparison to other forms of entertainment. The average cost of a movie is about $8 as compared to a $100 concert, sports games and dining out. As the film companies costs increase with inflation, they pass the cost onto the theaters through higher film rental %’s and in turn the theaters are forced to charge more for admission. $20 is a possibility, but not for awhile.

When asked what he'd like to see added to movie concession stands, his answer was Tacos, which ties into part II of our interview.

When asked what has been the most surprising thing he's learned about being in the movie industry? .... Bacon and egg flavored, being the exception - It’s all about the Popcorn sales!!!!!!!

Dishing Up: Think Like A Man

My Preview Screening of Think Like A Man was courtesy of Cinedelphia

Steve Harvey, comedian, actor, radio personality, best selling author and relationship expert, got to add one more thing to his list of accomplishments; his book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man is now a [hopefully equally successful] movie.

Harvey was in attendance at the Philly red carpet premiere of the film – that has the shortened title of Think Like A Man. He told the press

that he couldn’t possibly have anticipated the book inspiring a movie; but he’s very pleased with the fictionalizing of his book in a way that does it justice. He stated, there’s no comedic buffoonery; it’s funny, but with good storylines, real characters, and an amazing cast of actors.

In the forward of the book, Harvey professes I want every woman who truly wants a solid relationship but just can’t figure out how to get one; and those who are already in a relationship and trying to figure out how to make it better, to forget everything she’s ever been taught about men. Erase the myths, the heresy, everything your mother told you, your girlfriends, the advice you read in magazines and on TV - and find out here in these pages, who men really are.

Well, that’s a lot to live up to in a book or a movie, but I will say, similar to 2009's He’s Just Not That Into You, this movie also successfully takes apart several relationship and dating dilemmas and evenly distributes screen time between couples and friends trying to figure it all out:

You’ve got the long-term relationship that lacks a ring: Kristen (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On) and Jeremy (Jerry Ferrara, Entourage).

Girl who’s no longer gonna give it up so fast and guy looking for sex, not a girlfriend: Mya (Meagan Good, Stomp The Yard) and Zeke (Romany Malco, Weeds).

Mamma’s Boy securely tied to dominating apron strings and new girlfriend without scissors: Michael (Terrance J, 106 & Park) and Candace (Regina Hall, Scary Movie series).

The successful corporate female raider attracted to a broke dreamer - Lauren played by my girl, Taraji P. Henson looking 100% hotter than her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Dominic played by gorgeous Michael Ealy, who also attended the red carpet Philly premiere. (see great pics I took of Ealy on Cinedelphia.com site) And by the way, these two characters have amazing heat and chemistry!

There’s also a slew of well cast cameos. But the yolk that really holds Think Like A Man together is the crazy, fast, often ad-libbed comedy of Kevin Hart!

I want to see the movie again because it was hard to retain all the funny lines, and often hard to hear over the audience’s raucous laughter.

And yet, I agree with Steve Harvey, it’s not all comedy, and for those guys looking to dismiss it as a chick flick, don’t! Cause the men really get to have their say as well. The tables get turned so many times, it’s hard to keep score whether the women or men have the upper hand. But who cares really, as long as men and women ultimately get it together.

Just a Taste - Hunger Games, American Reunion, Cabin in the Woods

Here's my quick roundup from last Saturday's triple feature:

The Hunger Games is still riding high at the box office and I can see why, it was very wise of Suzanne Collins to write a book that brings together the best of Reality TV - the savagery of Survivor, the mentoring of The Voice, the back biting of The Apprentice and the pageantry of Dancing with the Stars.

In terms of Food in Film: most of the Districts are starving. Willing to eat crusts of bread used for feeding pigs. However, once chosen, the Tributes are offered ample displays of food both savory and sweet. Feasting on banquet after banquet, leading up to game day.

Although I was fully engaged with the movie, I still have trouble with the concept of children killing, and I mean massacring, other children. After all, our youth of today is plagued with violence in schools and no sense of respect and reverence for human life. To have a movie topping the box office that promotes kill or be killed, seems irresponsible. Particularly, seeing as at the end, there's little to no remorse, no consequences, and no end to the barbaric ritual. Which obviously leaves the door open for Hunger Games II.

I've seen all the American Pie movies. Not sure why I get such a kick out of this cast of raunchy, nerdy teens turned raunchy, nerdy 30 year-olds.

Everyone comes back for American Reunion, even Oz (Chris Klien) who was missing from American Wedding. But despite the full cast, including cameos by Shannon Elizabeth and the MILF guys, the whole thing falls flat. Writer Adam Herz just couldn't' seem to find that spark of silly humor this time around. Even the awkward sex talks between Jim (Jason Biggs) and his Dad (Eugene Levy) lack their usual bushy browed blunt rhythm and embarrassed, squirming pacing.

When Lionsgate bought the The Cabin in the Woods (shot in 2009) from bankrupt MGM, I'm sure they couldn't have realized it would share a theme in common with this year's blockbuster, The Hunger Games, but seeing them back to back the way I did, it was impossible to miss. **Spoiler Alert** Each movie features a team of people whose job it is to manipulate the lives of chosen young people, by creating scenarios using technology in order to use them as sacrifices. I think that's uncanny, especially considering neither movie is classified as Sci-fi per se.

At any rate, Joss Whedon completely put his stamp on this original, new slant on a old tried and true concept. I screamed, laughed and was once again reminded, December 21, 2012 is coming fast.

Commentary - Bully

Philadelphia Film Society (click to read PFS member's comments on this film) hosted a preview screening of Bully, formerly called The Bully Project. Which actually was screened in October during the 20th Philadelphia Film Festival, but I, and many others didn't pay it much attention. It deserves attention.

Director/Writer/Producer/Cinematographer Lee Hirsch who was bullied throughout his childhood, wanted to make a film that would give voice to kids who deal with this torment on a daily basis. His camera follows the lives of 3 kids currently being tortured: verbally, mentally, physically, but oddly, only a mention is made of cyber bullying, which is so prevalent today. Hirsch also interviews two sets of parents grieving for the loss of their child, taken as a result of bullying.

I think we tend to think of children as being the best of ourselves, but in reality, children can be mean, vicious, and driven by fear. This film takes place in rural America, but you can go anywhere in the world, I imagine, and find kids picking on another kid, simply because that kid is a little off, weird, looks funny, has a disability, or just walks to the beat of their own drum. Most of the time, that weird kid doesn't bother anyone, they'd like to be accepted, but really they'd be okay if they were just left alone.

Is Alex being treated well at school now with all this attention?

In this film, a 12 year-old named Alex is prominently featured. He was born a preemie, looks a little retarded and is just socially awkward. Before he can even make it to school he's being threatened, called names, fish face being the least harmful, poked, choked and humiliated. Why?

I think it's because our egos are so fragile, at any age, but particularly in our developmental stages, that many young people can't bear to witness weakness in their peers for fear it will make them have to examine their own self-image, weaknesses and insecurities. So they deflect those feelings out an onto an easy target.

It's excruciatingly painful to watch the victimized child; but I also feel sadness for the kids whose inner turmoil drives them to be cruel rather than compassionate. It's also so hard to watch the ineffectual parents, school faculty and law enforcement, who don't really listen to the kids, don't see the seriousness or simply don't know what to do about it. After all, bullying has been going on forever, perhaps it's getting more acute, and certainly, this film can and has establish a new dialog, but is there a solution?

I sat next to a woman during the screening who is lending her talents to help in this dilemma, her name is Andrea Brown, a school counselor who decided to create an organization called 21st Century Parenting which is positioning itself as a resource for parents faced with bullying, particularly cyber bullying.

A panel made up of educators, US Attorney's Office and a formerly bullied young adult gay male, spoke after the screening moderated by Good Day Philadelphia's Mike Jerrick.

Just a reminder to any regular readers - I do tend to post stuff to facebook and twitter during times when I'm short on time for writing a post.

This past week, I got to be a press photog on the Red Carpet for the premiere of Think Like A Man and someone else took a pic of me taking pics of the celebs, making me feel like a celeb! I encourage you to go see the movie. It's well played and funny! It's not a "black movie" its a relationship comedy with a stellar, predominantly black cast.

Philly Dining Tid"bite"- Charles Plaza

Friday night had dinner in Chinatown with friends who chose Charles Plaza as our Asian culinary destination. Not much in terms of decor, but the servers and owner - very attentive. The restaurant specializes in vegetarian Chinese cuisine and the dishes are prepared without MSG or heavy sauces.

For instance the sesame noodles have just a light coating. Of course, personally, I like a heavy, sticky, fattening peanut butter Thai sauce, but it's nice to now and again enjoy something without the guilt.

Steamed Chicken Dumplings: Good density and flavor - 3 Tines.

Fish of the day: Never has Tilapia been so satisfying! Crunchy, meaty and smothered in garlic sauce - 4 Tines!

Chicken in a Basket: So Unique! Love the asparagus inside and the brown gravy good for dipping the pieces of fried noodle basket - 3 Tines

Just a Taste: The Five-Year Engagement

Tom (Jason Segel) asks Violet (Emily Blunt) to marry him on the rooftop of the San Francisco restaurant where Tom is a sou chef. Violet accepts, they've been together for a year and all is perfect. Perfect that is until Violet gets offered a position at Michigan University in the Psychology department and Tom agrees they'll relocate there for the two years of her program. Only two years turns into five; the passage of time punctuated with the death of yet another grandparent. Their wedding plans continue to be in a state of flux or postponement, and Tom unable to find a decent chef position, goes a little mid-western stir crazy!

Jason Segel is convinced he's leading man material and also thinks that we want to see him bare his big, meaty body on screen. I don't agree with him on either of these things; but I do agree he's funny and even better, he writes funny. This latest Judd Apatow production co-written by Segel and it's director, Nicholas Stoller is definitely on par with Bridesmaids. The Five-Year Engagement has a lot of original dark humor, physical comedy and laugh out loud moments not shown in the trailer. It will also have you asking the question - would I eat the stale donuts or wait for the fresh? Let's just say, it's a “hole” lot of fun!

What's Not As Pleasing About The Five-Year Engagement: It is a little long, could use a bit of tightening up. Keven Hart is in it, but his part's unfunny; they make a big deal about the couple meeting at this make your own super hero costume party - flashbacks are shown of them at the party in a manner that feels as if it's building to a reveal that will have some bearing on their relationship in the present; but I guess sometimes a flashback is just a flashback.

Commentary - The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye

Have you ever heard the term "Pandrogyny"? Neither had I until I saw the documentary film The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye.

Filmmaker Marie Losier documents this unusual love affair between an underground, industrial music front man/woman - Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his/her better half - Lady Jaye. The two meet through a mutual dominatrix acquaintance and fall madly in love. So in love that Genesis and Lady Jaye decide rather than having a child (of which Genesis has two from a previous relationship) they would reform themselves into each other and therefore, symbolically, create one new person = Pandrogyny.

The idea sounds like sick, obsessive love, yet strangely that does not come across in the film. I suppose it's because both were avant-garde performance artists in their own right before meeting; so their decision to get plastic surgery to resemble each other, fell in line with the boundary pushing way of life they believed in.

The problem with the experiment - Genesis was already heading in the transsexual direction, a he more comfortable as a she. But Lady Jaye wasn't trying to look like a man; so although they both get plastic surgery (and breast implants as Valentine's Day gifts) there's no marked difference in Lady Jaye's appearance. It's really just Genesis (mid 50's) trying to look like Lady Jaye (early 30's), creating a fail on Pandrogyny in terms of aesthetics.

I was watching an interview with the director Marie Losier who met Genesis by chance at a gallery opening in Soho and was later introduced to Lady Jaye who chose Losier to be their documentary filmmaker. The three became very close friends and Losier had complete access to the couple on tour, through transformation and in their everyday lives - yet there's not a lot of footage: the plastic surgery aspect is a quick montage; there's far too many scenes of the band performing on tour; and yes, Lady Jaye does unexpectedly die during the making of the film, but that doesn't account for the fact that before her demise, she is not very vocal or filmed nearly as often as Genesis.

Perhaps this was by design to give the film additional mystique, as Lady Jaye's presence was somehow ethereal and oddly compelling. It would not have surprised me at all to see her ghostly image waft by in a posthumous cameo at the end of the film.

Philly Restaurant - Hawthornes Cafe

Hawthornes Cafe (738 11th Street) describes themselves as a beer boutique and gourmet eatery. So far, I've only been twice for brunch. Although, I did order a Duvel Belgian Ale my last visit, and found it to be far too bitter for a morning libation.

The restaurant is owned by Chris Fetfatzes, whose family runs Bella Vista Beer Distributors (755 S. 11th St.) So the ample selection of beers and ability to fill up your growlers seems to be a large selling point, but the waiting list for brunch attests to an appealing menu and good food.

What's pleasing about Hawthornes: The cozy fireplace waiting area, the part cafe/part coffee shop/part beer store atmosphere.
Also the large, very clean, unisex bathrooms

What's not so pleasing about Hawthornes: The waiting list for Brunch. It's a fairly decent size restaurant, but on a Sunday don't come starving and don't try to call ahead, just take a seat or take a walk until a table comes ready.

Philly Restaurant - Las Bugambilias

We were heading to South Street Diner when I noticed Las Bugambilias (148 South Street) not sure why it never caught my eye before as I normally pay attention to all the dining spots in and around Headhouse Square.

I plan on coming back to this romantic little brick-walled Mexican Cantina (hopefully with a date) as soon as possible. Unfortunately, my friend Di and I were really only looking for a quick bite, as earlier we consumed a big brunch (see Hawthornes post) and were tired after shopping and a movie (See The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye post), so she ordered a salad and I had soup.

The restaurant is owned by a married couple Michelle Zimmerman and Carlos Molina. Molina was a former chef at David Suro's Tequilas, and Zimmerman worked in the kitchen.

They must work very hard as Las Bugambilias has an extensive menu (not available online) from Buenos Dias (Mexican breakfasts) to incredible salads like Ensalada de Noples: chopped Mexican cactus leaves, marinated in lime and vinegar served w/ avocado, onions, tomato, Serrano chiles, queso fresco, coriander and shrimp tossed with a vinaigreta. By the way, cactus leaves have excellent texture, a cross btw a green bean and a roasted pepper.

To several Pescados (fish dishes) like: Chalupa Veracruz: Grouper filet, jumbo lump crabmeat, shrimp, and mussels in a salsa de chile Guajillo with mixed bell peppers, capes, celery and water crest served in a giant chalupa

And many Aves (poultry dishes), an assortment of Las Enchiladas, plenty of Carne - (beef dishes). In fact, when I return I'd like to order the Filete Toluca: Grilled Filet Mignon served atop a corn tortilla covered in a black bean puree with chorizo de Toluca and noplales, served in a salsa de chipotle.

Vegetariano meals and much more!

Sopa Tampico: Chile ancho (dried, smoked poblano), chipotle, tomato-seafood base with diced carrots, celery, leeks, shrimp, crabmeat and grouper - 3 Tines

What's Pleasing about Las Bugambilias: Reasonable prices and they don't close between lunch and dinner.

North By Northwest - Interview with Eva Marie Saint

Earlier this month the Turner Classic Movies’ “Road to Hollywood” tour came to Philly (Prince Theater) and brought along legendary actress Eva Marie Saint, the actress best known for her sexy spy role, playing opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's suspense classic - North By Northwest. The 10-city tour is part of a campaign to promote the vintage film network’s annual TCM Classic Film Festival (April 12-15).

I've seen North By Northwest close to a dozen times starting around the age of 12. It's one of my favorite Hitchcock flicks, so I was thrilled to get an opportunity to not only hear more about the making of the film from one of its stars, but also see it on the big screen!

For anyone who's never seen the film, here's my quick synopsis: Cary Grant plays Roger Thornhill, a twice divorced Mad Men (Ad Exec) with a more marital than maternal relationship with his mother (Jessie Royce Landis).

While meeting with clients at the Plaza Hotel, his identity gets mistaken for a CIA agent, when accidentally answering the page for a Roger Kaplan. Next thing you know he's forced into a vehicle, questioned by the king pin of some crime syndicate (James Mason); bourbon is forced down his throat and he's got to maneuver around those crazy California coastline roads so prevalent in movies of the 50's and 60's.

If you've ever seen the pilot episode of the TV show Remington Steele, you may recall before Pierce Brosnan steps on the scene, Laura (Stephanie Zimbalist) has to create the illusion of the great detective Remington Steele, by making hotel reservations under his name, stocking the room with men clothes and toiletry items, asking the valet to deliver dry cleaning etc.. This was all deliberately taken from the movie North by Northwest. In the film, there is no actual Roger Kaplan, it's just a name used for a CIA decoy.

My favorite part of the film is of course everyone's favorite, the last scene taking place on the face of Mount Rushmore. But a real highlight for me is the unabashed way in which Eve Kendal (Eva Marie Saint) seduces Roger Thornhill on the train. He's in the midst of running from killers, police, & CIA, yet her come hither looks and bold advances turns his head from danger to desire.

Eva Marie Saint is now 87 years-old and still incredibly lovely, feisty, funny and quick. The below Q & A is filmed from afar, but it's interesting to hear her spar with TCM's interviewer Ben Mankiewicz, discuss what it was like to work with the likes of Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock, and her acting debut on the film On the Waterfront.

Just a Taste: Albert Nobbs

The film Albert Nobbs has definite lesbian overtones; yet fits the bill for Masterpiece on PBS; and celebrates woman's ability to adapt and thrive under harsh circumstances. Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close) was born a female through and through; but after being orphaned and raped at the age of 14, she realizes as a boy, she'll have the ability to make a decent wage being a waiter/butler in establishments that cater to the high society of early 19th Century Ireland.

Hubert Page (Janet McTeer) also born a woman, married an abusive husband; after leaving him, she takes on his profession as a house painter and begins to present herself as a man, even to the point of marrying a sweet, loving, little seamstress.

These two hero/heroine characters don't have many scenes together, but it is their shared bond, friendship and secret, that is the most compelling part of the film. They also share the most humorous scene, where Nobbs and Page are dressed in female attire, running down the beach.

Although we know these two actresses in real life as women, they, with help of costume designer Pierre-Yves Gayraud, manage to look awkward, mannish and conspicuous in dresses.

Having played the part of Albert Nobbs on Broadway very early on in her career; getting this story to the big screen became a 15 year labor of love for Glenn Close, who also wrote the screenplay.

It always amazes me when rich, successful, well-connected actors and actresses have trouble getting a project green lighted. You'd think the studios would trust their passion. I trust that most audiences will find something both engaging and troubling about the film Albert Nobbs, although those with homophobic tendencies may be uncomfortable with the ending.

Just a Taste: Salmon Fishing in Yemen

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, an international story of love, war, faith and fishing. An Arab Sheik from the country of Yemen (Amr Waked) strongly desires to bring the sport of salmon fishing to the desert. Harriet Chetwode -Talbot (Emily Blunt) is the account executive of a British company which represents the business interests of the Shiek, and is given the task of finding a fishing expert/scientist, Dr Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor) to head up the Sheik's project. Also in the mix is an aggressive press secretary for the Prime Minister (Kristen Scott Thomas); Dr Jones' absentee wife; Chetwode-Talbot's missing in action boyfriend; and an array of obstacles that has everyone involved in the Yemen Salmon project swimming upstream.

Although I had trouble becoming engaged for the first 30 minutes or so of the film; by the end I was taken in by the zen outlook of the endeavor. I was also quite taken with that charming Sheik. For a man like that, I might consider being wife number 10 or 11.
