Philly Dining Interlude: MERCATO SUMMER TASTING MENU

My sister LeVonne's birthday (7/7)  just happened to fall on a Tuesday this year, which made it perfect for checking out Mercato (1216 Spruce St, Philadelphia, PA 19107) Tuesday Tasting Menu - 3 Courses for $33.00  #TastingTuesdays .

In terms of the decor, I like the simplicity, intimate size and natural lighting of Mercato, yet it had been over 5 years since the last time I'd dined there. It's an Italian BYOB, but not how you'd think of a traditional Italian restaurant; it's really more the type of place I like to go to for small plates, antipasti, inventive appetizers, grilled veggies, artisan cheeses etc...

Our 3 Courses (Antipasti/Secondi/Dolce)

CHILLED JERSEY TOMATO SOUP - crab fritter, basil sparrow lane white balsamic 

Balsamic was the key ingredient of the day!


The cool, but not cold temperature, the crunchy crab, the drizzle of olive oil, the hearty texture, all made for a perfect summer soup - 4 Tines


BALSAMIC BUCATINI & LAMB BOLOGNESE pistachio, oregano, piave cheese, manicardi 25 year-old balsamic 


What I have to say about this is... More Please! I wished I'd had a big, big portion. Wonderful combination of flavors, the Bucatini pasta is the consistency of a cold sesame noodle like you'd get at a Thai or Chinese restaurant. And I swear I could taste the difference between balsamic aged 25 years and regular balsamic. 4 Tines 

BALSAMIC POACHED PEAR goat cheese gelato, hazelnuts, vincotto fig balsamic


This was not very satisfying to me. I felt like the pear was too hard, the whipped goat cheese wasn't very flavorful. I was left feeling like I still wanted dessert - 1.5 Tines


LeVonne chose the CHERRY TORTA almond crumble, white chocolate, basil villa manodori blasamic vinegar.  She wasn't much happier with it then I was with my dessert, but we did appreciate our server adding the celebratory candle!

But the real star of the film is all the food preparation, every other scene made me groan with want of everything up on that screen! Will there ever be a cap on movie prices?

Will we one day pay $20 a pop?

Why don't we pay on a scale?

A crap movie like everything Adam Sandler has ever done should cost about $4.50.
Big action movies like"Lord of the Rings", "Iron Man," "Transformers" are worth $10.
Woody Allen movie or something like "Silver Linings Playbook" $6-$7.
A chick flick or light comedy $5.75 and most Indie Films $5.25.

You could even do it by seasons - all summer block busters from May to August - $10
Sept - November 15th $3.50 - $4
Back to $10 for Thanksgiving and Christmas etc...

Or you can do it by A Actors ($9 - $10), B Actors ($6 - $7) TV actors on the big screen ($3.50 - $4)

Surely I'm not the first person to realize this makes sense. Has it been voted on in the Motion Picture Industry and then vetoed? If so, why?
