Get Strapped in “Getaway” is a FAST RIDE to NowhereBy Christopher “Flood the Drummer”® Norris
In a film that can only be described as a three car pileup involving Ocean’s Eleven, The Italian Job and Eagle Eye, Director Courtney Solomon delivers a 90 minute, fast-paced forgettable thriller starring Ethan Hawke that will have you hanging off the edge off your seat waiting for the good part.
Retired driver Brent Magna (Hawke) straps up for the biggest race of his life when his wife, Leanne (Rebecca Budig) is kidnapped by a crazed fan (Jon Voight) and in order to get her back safely he must complete “Grand Theft Auto” type missions using the rigged Shelby Mustang Super Snake of an unnamed teen hacker (Selena Gomez) who happens to be the daughter of a billionaire banker. “Since when does a father buy an armored sports car for his daughter? Plus a billionaire banker with a genius daughter, who somehow figures out how to live stream their adventure, is too much of a weak plot for me. Nor is Gomez’s acting believable.
I thought maybe Williams and I were being too hard on the film, but as it turns out, Getaway has received extremely negative reviews. It currently holds a 2% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 58 reviews, with the consensus: "Monotonously fast-paced to the point of exhaustion, Getaway offers a reminder of the dangers in attempting to speed past coherent editing, character development, sensible dialogue, and an interesting plot.”
