Looper (click for synopsis) opened this weekend (9/28/12). You know I get off on sci-fi/time travel stuff, but this movie doesn't just rely on that. It's exciting, humorous and thought-provoking. I was amazed at how quickly I was assimilated into the high-concept, characters and invested in the ultimate outcome.
The title suggests it's a movie that jumps around a lot; but don't worry, it's not too confusing, disjointed or an overloaded time travel head trip.
In fact, Writer/Director Rian Johnson created a very balanced film. There's enough action & violence for testosterone driven movie-goers; enough plausible science for geeks; unique enough for indie movie-goers to see its merit.
Kudos to the young boy who plays Cid (Pierce Gagnon) this demon/angel child is mesmerizing. At times playing smarter than the adults around him, other times sweet and adorable, then unleashing the monster within - always perfectly on cue in each scene.
And of course Bruce Willis does what he does best - Bad-Ass! Often having to berate and beat up his blunderbuss wielding youthful self, played by the very talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I'm recommending you see this one in the theaters!
Food in Film Footnote: Levitt's character has a favorite diner he frequents and where he finally confronts his older self. Their steak and eggs are never touched, but it's a great scene for the two actors to face off; and we really take note of Levitt's face prosthetic and skill reflecting a younger Willis.
