Roy's Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine

I told my sisters to buy me Gift Certificates to restaurants for my Christmas presents and I think I'd like to make it an annual gift request from now on.

One gave me a GC for the Best of Philly 2008 Osteria (review to come) The other gave me one to Outback. Now don't get me wrong, I can enjoy a decent cut of steak, a butter, sugar encrusted sweet potato and a Wallahbedarn to the fullest! However, I was thrilled to turn the card over and discover the more upscale Roy's is a chain under the same corporation as Outback and therefore headed to the Mainland (Center City) the day after Christmas.

The restaurant was relatively quiet, assumably because everyone was still full from the holiday festivities of the previous night. Good! This made for a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. The decor is understated; the Hawaiian theme is not overplayed like some amusement theme park. Nor do you feel like you're in the trendiest of spots. The kitchen is on view, which takes away from some of the elegance, but overall you still feel as if you've gone out for the evening, as it should be anytime the average price per person is $50.

I started with a scrumptious Ginger Daiquiri.

Although this restaurant is known for some wonderfully creative Sushi Plates. And the Hawaiian Style Mixed Plates of: SURF & TURF Grilled Filet Mignon & Black Tiger Shrimp Egg & Yukon Potato Cake, Roasted Pearl Onions, Pomegranate Rosemary Demi 39.95ROY’S CLASSIC TRIOHibachi Grilled Salmon, Roy’s Original Blackened Island Ahi & Hawaiian Style Misoyaki Butterfish A sampling of our three Classics in their traditional preparations 29.95SHELLFISH COMBOU-10 Scallops & Seared Black Tiger Shrimp Chorizo & Root Vegetable Hash, Thai Basil City

I decided the best use of my Gift Certificate would be to go for the $35 Prix Fixed Menu. I cannot properly describe the perfection of my appetizer-Proscuitto Wrapped Shrimp & Goat Cheese Polenta Served in a Lemon , Caper & Herb Butter I really only ordered it because it was the most interesting of the choices. Now I'm contemplating an encore of this appetizer, followed by my most favorite of all favorite desserts (other than a Duncan Heinz yellow cake with chocolate frosting) Flourless Chocolate Cake, or as Roy's names theirs Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle all warm, crackly chocolate outside and gooey hot chocolate inside w/ vanilla a la mode!

Oh yes, by the way, my entree:
Tender Braised Hawaii Kai Beef Short Ribs Served with a Natural Braising Sauce
was aptly tender, ample and flavorful.

But the real star of the film is all the food preparation, every other scene made me groan with want of everything up on that screen! Will there ever be a cap on movie prices?

Will we one day pay $20 a pop?

Why don't we pay on a scale?

A crap movie like everything Adam Sandler has ever done should cost about $4.50.
Big action movies like"Lord of the Rings", "Iron Man," "Transformers" are worth $10.
Woody Allen movie or something like "Silver Linings Playbook" $6-$7.
A chick flick or light comedy $5.75 and most Indie Films $5.25.

You could even do it by seasons - all summer block busters from May to August - $10
Sept - November 15th $3.50 - $4
Back to $10 for Thanksgiving and Christmas etc...

Or you can do it by A Actors ($9 - $10), B Actors ($6 - $7) TV actors on the big screen ($3.50 - $4)

Surely I'm not the first person to realize this makes sense. Has it been voted on in the Motion Picture Industry and then vetoed? If so, why?
